Laser hair removal is a safe and highly effective way to remove unwanted hair. With this treatment, a laser – or a beam of highly concentrated light – is used to damage an individual hair follicle, eliminating the possibility of future hair growth. The process does not damage the tissue surrounding the hair follicle.
Laser hair removal is effective in removing unwanted hair on nearly any part of the body. It has proven to be successful on millions of men and women of varying hair color, texture and skin type. Treatment can be customized to maximize efficiency for your specific needs.
Before: If you are interested in laser hair removal, you will first need to undergo a consultation. During this meeting, we will discuss the risks and benefits of laser hair removal, review your medical history, outline a treatment plan, and possibly take photos for before-and-after assessment.
In the days leading up to your treatment, you will need to prepare by staying out of the sun and avoiding electrolysis, waxing and tweezing. Shaving is acceptable and may even be recommended by your doctor.
During: Depending on the area being treated, a laser hair removal session may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. You may feel a slight stinging sensation as the laser goes to work. A topical anesthesia may be used on more sensitive areas, and the skin will constantly be cooled and measured to ensure safety and comfort.
After: You may resume normal activity immediately after treatment. Redness and swelling are common for the first few hours after treatment, as is a stinging sensation that could last for one or two days.
As you heal from laser hair removal, it is advised that you stay out of the sun for at least one week and use sunscreen daily. Wash the treated area with soap and water, but avoid vigorously scrubbing or picking at the affected skin.
While hair growth will be reduced after each treatment, it may take several sessions to eliminate it completely.
